A few of my favourite journey experiences have been street journeys. Everybody agrees – from journey writers to average highway trippers – that a California highway journey that includes Route 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway) along the coast is one of those lifetime should-dos. Probably the most spectacular section of this famed road is between Morro Bay and Monterey, notably within the Huge Sur space. The highway was blasted into the aspect of the sheer cliffs that dominate this space and is completely created by man – a piece of engineering, persistence, and ingenuity. You may visit areas unreachable earlier than this superb highway and its many bridges had been constructed, and soak up sweeping views of the Pacific.
